History
The tools and philosophies of Lean evolved from the post war quality improvement community. Reliable production of goods, with good quality and affordable prices, was the mainstay of growth.
Lean is the latest evolution of the many quality improvement movements which have changed the face of healthcare over the last few decades. It builds on, and encompasses the previous works in TQM, CQI, Six Sigma and ISO to form an overall management system tying all areas of the organization together and aligning them with corporate strategy. The Toyota Motor Corporation developed the majority of the methods we describe as “lean”. Their preeminent position in the world automotive industry serves as testament to the enduring success of the system.
But healthcare isn’t about producing cars, or widgets is it? During the last few years, several healthcare institutions have been diligently transferring these methods into their environment with stunning success. Virginia Mason Healthcare in Seattle Washington has adopted the system as it’s overall management system. Park Nicollet in Minnesota has achieved over $25m in documentable savings over a two year period.
