Retreat Healthcare, Brattleboro, VT - Current Situation

Retreat Healthcare was experiencing delays in admissions and evaluation for new patients resulting in unsatisfactory patient conditions. A team led by Lee Bryan conducted Value Stream Analysis which indicated a 12 hour average overall lead time to get patients from initial contact to placement on the unit.


Causes of the delays included lengthy forms for completion, lack of available equipment and staff at critical times, information systems incompatibility and variation in staff procedures and physician requirements during the process.

 

The team worked on identifying the problems within the context of the Value Stream Map, concentrating on those which produced the biggest obstacles to flow. These ideas formed the basis of a Future State map.
